Irrational Dress Movement

Diane Abatemarco is an artist with a background in the study of language. Her work for the last five years has been translating the study of language to the study of garment construction. Diane uses embroidery to embellish and adorn garments, as a means of making them luxurious and personalized. embroidered motifs are translations of events, ideas, and moments into the language of clothing, telling a personal history worn close to the body. Irrational dress movement is a call back to the mid and late 1800s, when western women began patterning and sewing clothing that fit their lifestyle, allowing them to wear looser clothing so that they could move and work more freely. Some of these women formed the “rational dress society.”
