Projects

The Northern New England Fibershed presents several projects for the benefit of producers throughout New England

Bast Fiber Feasibility Study

A small group of volunteers recently conducted a Feasibility Study for a bast fiber processing facility, supported by a micro-grant from Fibershed Headquarters. This study aimed to assess the potential for establishing a bast fiber processing facility that would benefit local fiber producers, thereby enhancing the sustainability of the regional textile economy. More information can be found in the link below.

Design Challenge

Last year NNEF launched a Year-Long Regional Design Challenge that invited participants to create items exclusively from local fiber supplies. This initiative not only sparked innovation but also strengthened ties within the local textile community, showcasing the wealth of talent and resources in the region. The Challenge culminated in a Showcase held in Fifield Hall where Phyllis Marinoff won the grand prize for her linen table runner & napkins, Sara Goodman won second place for her three cashmere shawls, Theresa Walker won most creative for her Vera Vest, and Marion Dillon won most local for her Linen Jacket. 2023 Round Table Event

In 2023 over 65 stakeholders convened at Sanborn Mills Farm to tackle the opportunities and challenges facing the regional textile infrastructure. This important gathering was made possible through a micro-grant from Fibershed Headquarters, alongside generous support from local businesses and individuals. The goal of the Round Table was to help answer the question “how can we help?” to the farmers, the makers, the mills, and the individuals and businesses that support our regional fibershed. Fiber Farmer Survey

A survey of fiber farmers was sent to fiber farms in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont to evaluate the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of our Fibershed region. The survey was distributed from September 1st, 2021 until December 1st, 2021, a period of three months. The aim of this survey was to answer the question “How can the NNEF best serve members of the Fibershed community in their endeavors financially, environmentally, and socially?” Click the link below to see the results.
